Dont know if any of you guys have used M.A.M.E before but i can highly recommend it, it stands for Multi Arcade Machine Emulator and will make your PC do just that - let it play the original Arcade games
basically you install it, download a few Roms (the actual arcade game in zip form), place the zipped roms in the roms folder where you installed Mame, and run mame - voila - arcade gaming on your pc.
Remember These Guys?
Heres some links ...
//Get the Emulators here (I use Mame32 and it seems fine)
http://www.mame.net/ A Rom site ...
http://www.rom-world.com/dl.php?name=MAME&letter=A I am starting my own home Arcade Machine Project, where i adapt an Arcade Machine to run the Mame Emulator and Roms and use the Arcade machines controls to play them as they were intended
More on that kind of project here ...
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?board=1.0 Saint - the guy who runs the above webby has released a book on how to build your own, his site has excellent info for the interested
Note - dont go asking on forums for game roms - use google.
Example pic of a M.A.M.E. project ...
There are also "front Ends" available that can handle various Emulators at the same time that you can switch inbetween eg MAME/Neogeo/N64 etc etc, not forgetting there is a PC in there - you can switch to this too!!!
Happy Gaming
Been a fan of MAME for many years. It does work well but not perfect so dont expect every game to work and many are not suited to keyboard and mouse. Some are 'harder' than the original as todays beefy PC's run them faster than they were meant too but the emulator fixes this for most. If you check out MAME forums you will also find that sound compatibility is a pain - no soundblaster compatibility in those days
If you surf hard there are Shareware and Freeware versions of most of the classics rewritten for windoze
downloads.com
tucows.com
etc
Ive not had the issues you mention Steve, the sound is correct and the ones ive tried seem the same as i remember them, yeh a lot arent suited to a PCs mouse/keys but there are other alternatives that can overcome that, you can buy Arcade Control Panels that will plug in and work fine, i tried some of the LightGun ones (i changed the control in Mame32 to use my mouse and it worked nicely).
It would be a shame for the uninformed to miss out on some free gaming hence my post.
Going to look at a few Arcade Machines soon to find the best Cab for my project, i have a Cab now that runs Super Space Invaders 91 (bought it about 10yrs ago) but its a bit worse for wear and is plain Black, i want 2 player controls etc so finding a nice Cab that has some originality about it is top priority for me
No - definitely try it - sound issue is with some games/pc spec combos only.
Some games used track balls, wheels etc and the keyb/mouse changes gameplay.
My fave was a game called tempest which used a simple knob and fire button and basic vector graphics - full colour unlike Tank Commands red Vectors only.
Good luck with the Arcade Rig - sounds like a lotta fun
Hehe yeh i remember Tempest, one of my faves was BattleZone (the green vector gfx pic above), had the chance of one of those machines a few months ago - should have bought it as it was cheap (maybe it will still be there

)
Yah - looking forward to me Project Steve - i have a corner allocated for it ready
Heres some pix of my existing one ...
http://www.cobra.funmodsforu.com/CobraProject/ If i cant find a suitable one this one will be getting the treatment
OOF - it looks as old and battererd as us two ! Needs a lot of love and attention. U gonna bury an old PC rig inside or revive the old fella?
Oh it works fine, but id rather find a Cab that has all the decals etc still on it for a nicer look, this one is an emergency one i can use if needed (does need some TLC tho)
Note the inside pic - there are other game cards in there it can run
BTW - you can run the original games and change over to M.A.M.E in the same machine
Ahh WinXP platform, if you remember an Arcade game called Duck-Hunt - you miss the ducks the dog laughs at you - one of the guys from the B.Y.O.A.C. forum made a PC version where you shoot that damn dog haha.
Hmm - were you very very drunk when you dreamed about that - hehe
I kid you not - Youll find it on the right (Dogg Hunt Beta)
http://www.oscarcontrols.com/lazarus/ BTW i also run an N64 Emulator which is excellent and an Amstrad CPC Emulator (my first coding days were spent on the CPC in the old 8bit days :P)
I wont mention the SNES emulator Elgan said to try to compare Pilot Wings 64 to the SNES version (both good btw)
Nice.
Played Zelda 64 on the N64 emulator. Nice game.
The commodore 64 (spelling?) had good games - u come across an emmy for that ?
I understand that Sony stamped on the PS2 emmy - I'm sure I read that somewhere
Ive seen the C64 one somewhere, ill grab it next time i browse (goin to work shortly

), yah theres a lot of computers/consoles ive had over the years i might just Re-Visit for a bit of Nostalgia
EDIT ... wow theres a java version for webbys ...
http://www.dreamfabric.com/c64/
