Hi there,
I started a german wiki for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Spearhead and Breakthrough about one year ago. This wiki now contains 384 pages (official statistic), but mediawiki counts only sites with internal links, so I guess there a about 50 more pages.
There are a lot of information about the game, server administration, many detailed map descriptions mods. But there are also services like a german cheaterlist, clandatabase and news (possibility to easy add them to own website). I think this is a very good way to make those information accessible to "normal" serveradmins and gamers.
My wish is, to add other languages esp. english to that wiki. Because I spend a long time in writing german aticles, I've not enough time, to translate it. Is there someone, who is interessted in helping me building an english MoH:AA Wiki?
Have a look at:
www.mohaa-wiki.de
Nice idea and work Beatz, im sure someone will help with the translations
I would like something similar for MRU - like an "everything in 1 place deal"
I hope ... that would be really great.
If you decide, to use a wiki and need help, pls contact me.
I was actually thinking about such an idea a few days ago. I'll only have time in the weekend to work on it.
Oh, great that's a beginning. Did you think about realising a wiki within mru or an independand wiki for mohaa?
Probably you know
http://mohwiki.com , an english wiki for moh with the focus on Airborne, but it seems there is no one who is interested in writing. Just a few pages since nearly a year.
So, if you want, I'll check what to do making my mohaa wiki multilingual. In first step, it's possible to use the domain mohaa-wiki.de an later register a new domain (mohaa-wiki.com / net / org) an use de.mohaa-wiki.xxx and en.mohaa-wiki.xxx.
What do you think about that?
Well, I'd like it to have a fingerprint of MRU on it. Since it is my safe haven. I was actually wanting to do it on mru.
My idea was rather than info, more a collection of forum (modding) knowledge and tutorials all combined in 1 place. So people won't need to endlessly search forums for scattered valuable information. Of course general information is always welcome since it won't specificly be about modding all the time. I just like the fact of every bit of knowledge gathered in one place. (I'm talking like an owl lol)
Also besides that I was thinking about a database of ALL moh files (from scripts to lost/unreleased files) gathered together. Of course all files uploaded externally, downloadable through link to these external places and people can add files if they want, only through validation. So I can see if it's a ripoff, crap, already added etc... I don't know if this is possible with Wiki.
Also about the translation. I'm not a very good German speaking person, though I'm still learning German. BUT I'm Belgian and I know how most things work so it won't be too hard to figure out what you're talking about and translating it to English or Dutch for that matter.
I haven't heard of that moh wiki though it's small because hardly anyone plays Airborne, I got Airborne if you want me to write about it. I'll try to be objective.
Okay, great Idea. So, your focus would be on modding and mapping. That's a bit different than mohaa-wiki.de but with some consistencies. I have a custom map database with many detailed descriptions and just started to fill an mods Portal as an overview for existing mods.
I hope, we can work together in some parts of your wiki. I spent a lot of time in creating templates for mapdescriptions p.e. with mediawiki. Validation of uploads is not fully possible. But I included this in a database of german cheaters. So I could help you realizing your mediawiki and otherside add some of your maps and mods to mohaa-wiki.de.
Maybe, we can talk in Teamspeak?
i just was on the side Beatz,,,
i give you a hint...
brite youre jpg's a bit up,,they are to dark
and in german
die bilder sind zu dunkel,,mussen etwas helderer
I hope you don't take my new site as an insult/competition. I thought you wouldn't like my approach of a database for files and modding. Files can be validated if people send it to me and I add it to the site.
Of course we can work together. There's a big German MoH community. I'll advertise your site and support inter-lingual pages(=I make an english page, I notice you have a German page of the same subject, I put up a link to a german version on my page).
I like organization and working freely, so I made the site on impulse. I also think translating would go slower than just writing it in English (the knowledge I know and find). If you like, I'll put a link to your site on my wiki. And you can help me, just join and I'll add you as member or organizer (they can both do the same thing lol)!
EDIT:
Teamspeak, I have no mic sorry. Msn'll do I think?
However I do not use mediawiki (I didn't knew wiki's source was out lol). It's a 'wiki' making website where I signed up. Using they're own style, codes, templates...
wel,,than it shoot be time every sfx member has a mic. it's very usefull sometimes
@STORM
I edited most images (Screenshots) to be brighter, but I'll have a look on that images, which are to dark. Thx ;-)
@Soldier Of Ra
No, don't worry, It's great to know there'll be a wiki in english, even if it's not "my" wiki. Which wiki system (or website) do you use / plan to use? Interlingual pages would be the best way to connect both wikis I think. Have you got an URL for me? I just took a look at wikia, but didn't find it.
My provider:
http://www.wikispaces.com/ My wiki:
http://mohdatabase.wikispaces.com/ In fact, there's a topic of my wiki in this forum!
Of Course, you started really fast and wrote a lot, good work. I saw, you inserted a map. I wrote a template (http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/Vorlage:Map) for maps with many features. You may have a look at my description of
8 Play Crossroads. The following features are included in my map template:
{{Map
|Screenshot = screenshot_mapname.jpg
|mapname = dm/full_mapname
|game = AA / SH / BT
|maptype = DM / OBJ
|additinalgametype = [[Countdown]]
|recommen_weapons = a list of recommented weapons
|DMW = yes / no
|description = a description of the map
|objectives = description of objectives (on obj maps)
|size = very small / small / middle / big / very big
|players = with how many players is this map playable
|specials =
* lift
* secret tunnel under the map
|errors =
* texture problems in spearhead
* only one spawnpoint in FFA gametype
|Download = [http://www.mydomain.com/download/map.pk3 Download at mydomain.com]
|similar_maps = [[Duenkirchen]]
}} This template includes automated categorization. I spend many hours in creating and expanding this template. If you like it, let me know. I could help you, with it.
Is it javascript? Or something else? But 211476 has made the page for that map. I haven't done any map pages yet.
But yes it's very good!
No, that's not javascript. In wikis, you can use templates. They're rendered on the webserver. You can use variables wihin the templates. I'll try to have a look, how the templates work in your wiki. But I think, they're similar to mediawikis templates, even if there can't be used as much features as in mediawiki. But first, I'll try to realize the linking to your wiki :-D
I think I need a paid account for templates... but can we talk on msn, chatting on a forum is kinda slow :p
Click my name here to get my mail on my profile page and add me to msn.
I don't have MSN, just ICQ (158462232) and XFire (plhsbeatz).
Xfire then, though MoHAA will act strange if xfire is on...
use icq i have it to and there are also guy's with ts there,,
icq is not what it was before,,it's 200 times better
I created a first template version for maps. I hope, I didn't forget anything important. You may test it.
My first impressive on wikispaces
The tempate engine and wikispaces at all is very restricted. You may think about chaning the system? Wikia p.e. is much more powerfull with many features but free, too. And it's hosted on wikia servers, too. One year ago I spent a lot of time in testing those free wiki systems including hosting. Wikia would have been my first choice, but I decided to realize it myself. Wikia uses mediawiki, the system wikipedia uses. Wikia's systems ist always up to date.
Okay so I need to change now? I already did a lot of progress and I'm supposed to leave that??
I didn't start learning javascript just to switch to another site.
You don't need to, it's your decission. :-D I just wanted you to think about.
I realized the multilingual links to your wiki and get noticed of a big problem. Wikispaces uses "+" in URLs instead of spaces. Wikia and many other wikis uses underscored (_) instead of. The Problem is, I can add a "+" so "8 Play Crossroad" will be "8+Play_Crossroad" in URL, but most browsers changes many signs into their ASCII-Codes with "%" as prefix. That means, most browsers are calling "8%2BPlay%2BCrossroad". The underscored will always be the same.
In short: I'm not able to link to any of your wiki page, which contains a space in title. On wikia System it would be possible easyly.
Please have a look at my links to your wiki (left sidebar -> "English"):
http://www.mohaa-wiki.de http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/8_Play_Crossroads
Hmm I see...if this wikia has a lot of storage then I'll go to there. But those +'s are there because I used spaces in my pagenames. But still every browser will convert those links to ASCII codes.
I don't think, there a limit at wikia. Please have a look on some gaming wikis.
Okay, I made a wiki at wikia. But I'm kind of disappointed about it at my first sight; It's brand new and it's already loaded with crap. I did not ask for all these boxes and examples. Why do they dump all help topics in my wiki? And where in god's name do I change settings or get page overviews? You say it uses mediawiki and you use it too, so would you know where is the control panel??
lenny,,it's easyer when you talk to him on TS,,buy a mic,, only 2 euro
i had a look over his side today and what i saw was very intresting,,,
realy a nice informatic side,,
maybey i can store my 1800 maps there,,,,,
ps
@ beatz,,is united fairplay going to back you up???
Hmm, then why would I bother putting any effort in my database?
you can combine,,Beatz is looking for a second admin
converd BE and GER together
combined MOH borders,,ha ha,,be ONE
as we are here at MRS
The time wil come that some sites wil combine together
start first,,lets combine everthing together,,
and i think Beatz wil join this community to
he's olready a member of a very ,very big community in germany
and you speak german to,,lol
belgium...3 lanq. vlaams,waals en duits
you are 3 in 1
ha ha ,,as me i speak them to but i'm dutch
I think, they're creating dummy pages for people who don't know how to start. You may delete them, if you want.
In Mediawiki, you won't find a control panel, as know from other systems. Everything you need is controled by wiki-like editing of some special pages. For example the page
http://mohmods.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar controls the menĂ¼ on the left side. The customazation is much more powerfull than in wikispaces. On the site
http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page you'll find a lot of interesting help. If not, ask the team, you'll get an anwer fast.
I think, if you'll spend a bit time, you will love it. By the way, interlingual links to that wiki works fine:
http://www.mohaa-wiki.de http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/8_Play_Crossroads @STORM
Why do you think, UF is going to back me up? We've got a partnership with UF, mohaa-online, etc. And I'm nearly the only one, who's working. Now I'm trying to combine their forum with my wiki. :-)
Me, German? Barely, I'm still in highschool, I only had 1 hour German a week last year and this year 3. In total I've had like 40 lessons. Most of the time we just messed around with the teacher. There's no way I'm translating all that, even though I can understand German quite well. It's a LOT faster writing than translating. And I certainly won't translate in BE or FR, I'm not a robot. If tutorials appear in french/german, then I'll have no choice.
And I cannot work in teams or with restrictions. Nature doesn't allow me to. So I and the database would be better off doing it all myself. Personally, I think it would be very unlikely to see some sites combine together.
Now what's going to happen?? I'm sick of wasting my time at wikispaces and wikia if it's never good enough. Shockingly, I have a life as well!
Combining is good, but ... I think, best way is, that you write, what you want (freely) and we link eachother if the same article exists on both projects.
So my proposing:
English wiki with focus on the database and german wiki with focus on documentation are two projects with overlappings in some points (p.e. maps). We should link to eachother and profil from eachother in those points.
Which wiki system?
You spent time in wikispaces, sure you feel sick but you want to build up a really big project. I'm sure, wikia will be the better choice. You would spend a lot of times the time you "wasted" right now. I made that mistake on work. I realized a wiki in our company with focus on knowledge management. Please don't do the same mistake, just for a few days you spent time. What if you spend much more time on wikispaces a in two month you get noticed that many things you want to realise won't work?
maybey i can store my 1800 maps there,,,,,
well storm..i looked recently at my maps...and was amazed i had alot more than i thought..i am guessing around 1000 or so lol...anyways no matter were ya decide to put them ..putting them somewere is a good idea..after all most the great map sites are gone...we need another place like www.gamersmaps.com ..remember that site before it was killed? as i was saying once a place is selected i would gladly upload any maps to it that isnt posted.
Hi Gold ... What about filefront?
yah that's a possible solution also...but one would have to stay on top the emails until all the email notices stop...every file you upload there ya later get a notice that they are gonna delete the files unless you choose not for them to be deleted in the email link...a map database would be awful nice thou..i have many many maps that i fixed that the map authors didn't fix.Fix meaning all loading screens work..scoreboard pix..if was missing textures and was fixable fixed those issues as well..a good example is the map ya guys keep mentioning..8_play_crossroad..i noticed the truck when using this map in spearhead spawns way above the ground. Can be easily fixed and a new version called 8_play_crossroad_sh.pk3 created and uploaded:yes
Beatz welcome to MRU:)
-It wasn't just a few days, I really spent a long time learning javascript and setting it all up. I don't know what you understand when you say knowledge management but the only knowledge in MoH I know is modding.
-Me not doing what mistake??
-Fine, I guess I have no choice than to take wikia. But how do I make sure it's only I that can edit my wikia. There isn't even a feature list. How do I know what I can and can't? How much storage do I have?? What and how many pages have they dumped in my wiki?
I haven't even seen an upload system, where is all this stuff???
-Gold, just use megaupload.com
Oh, sorry, I thought, you just startet a week ago. You can use JavaScript at Wikia, too. You can insert JavaScript for the whole site or just for you.
The mistake I made, was on my work. I work in an IT department a big steel company with about 20.000 employees. I started an internal wiki for some departments. It's easier storing many information in a wiki than in documents within a fileserver. First wiki I started was a bit similar to wikispaces features. I chose it because it was very easy to start with. After a few month the wiki grows that much, I had to set up a new wiki system and insert all the content to the new system. I took me weeks.
YES, you've got a choice, I just recommend you to use wikia instead of wikispaces.
- You can protect every single page, but on wikia is no option to protect the whole wiki. "Everyone can edit" is the main reason why using a wiki and no other web content management system, like joomla, typo3, ...
- You know what you can and can't, when you've read the
http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page - There is an Upload System: Look at the left menubar: Upload image (max filesize=5MB)
- I don't know exactly which pages are created as dummy, there are many pages in the help namespace. In the main namesoace is only one page.
- I didn't found any storage limit for pages or files. There are wikis with more than 64,500 pages and 30,000 images.
There will be no database from my part. Lack of interest, time and patience to use the new system. Period. In fact I'm planning to retire (you could say quit) MoH completely.
WooT
OMG - people still have (a tiny bit) of interest in Moha
Must admit I binned my collection after Airborne - which was crap.
Dont play multiplayer online anymore coz of the cheats/kids/idiots but do enjoy single player COD4 and COD2 from time to time
Hi to Elgan, Cobra and Krug. Hope you are all well.
Hope the site keeps going (I was a lousy babysitter for it - way back :blush)
For sentimental reasons mru stays in bookmarks :love
formally known as SSUK
Haha Steve!!!!
Its been a while m8y, good to see you still around

You said it M8....
I feel left out..:(
