MOHAA Series: General / Halloween Map Competition?
November 03, 2008, 10:24:24 PM
Hi cubus, we tested your map today evening. Really great Map with a lot of fun. This map is a completely different gameplay. The halloween feeling is really well done, nice sound and gfx effects. I just reduced the sound volume while collecting the balls to make the map playable for me. :-)

   I just a small bug:

   Sometimes, when I got caught for 10 seconds four times in a row, the doors doesn't open completly.

Oh, sorry, I thought, you just startet a week ago. You can use JavaScript at Wikia, too. You can insert JavaScript for the whole site or just for you.

   The mistake I made, was on my work. I work in an IT department a big steel company with about 20.000 employees. I started an internal wiki for some departments. It's easier storing many information in a wiki than in documents within a fileserver. First wiki I started was a bit similar to wikispaces features. I chose it because it was very easy to start with. After a few month the wiki grows that much, I had to set up a new wiki system and insert all the content to the new system. I took me weeks.

   YES, you've got a choice, I just recommend you to use wikia instead of wikispaces.

   - You can protect every single page, but on wikia is no option to protect the whole wiki. "Everyone can edit" is the main reason why using a wiki and no other web content management system, like joomla, typo3, ...

   - You know what you can and can't, when you've read the http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page">http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page

   - There is an Upload System: Look at the left menubar: Upload image (max filesize=5MB)

   - I don't know exactly which pages are created as dummy, there are many pages in the help namespace. In the main namesoace is only one page.

   - I didn't found any storage limit for pages or files. There are wikis with more than 64,500 pages and 30,000 images.

Hi Gold ... What about filefront?

Combining is good, but ... I think, best way is, that you write, what you want (freely) and we link eachother if the same article exists on both projects.

   So my proposing:

   English wiki with focus on the database and german wiki with focus on documentation are two projects with overlappings in some points (p.e. maps). We should link to eachother and profil from eachother in those points.

   Which wiki system?

   You spent time in wikispaces, sure you feel sick but you want to build up a really big project. I'm sure, wikia will be the better choice. You would spend a lot of times the time you "wasted" right now. I made that mistake on work. I realized a wiki in our company with focus on knowledge management. Please don't do the same mistake, just for a few days you spent time. What if you spend much more time on wikispaces a in two month you get noticed that many things you want to realise won't work?

I think, they're creating dummy pages for people who don't know how to start. You may delete them, if you want.

   In Mediawiki, you won't find a control panel, as know from other systems. Everything you need is controled by wiki-like editing of some special pages. For example the page http://mohmods.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar">http://mohmods.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar controls the menĂ¼ on the left side. The customazation is much more powerfull than in wikispaces. On the site http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page">http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Main_Page you'll find a lot of interesting help. If not, ask the team, you'll get an anwer fast.

   I think, if you'll spend a bit time, you will love it. By the way, interlingual links to that wiki works fine:

   http://www.mohaa-wiki.de">http://www.mohaa-wiki.de

   http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/8_Play_Crossroads">http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/8_Play_Crossroads

   @STORM

   Why do you think, UF is going to back me up? We've got a partnership with UF, mohaa-online, etc. And I'm nearly the only one, who's working. Now I'm trying to combine their forum with my wiki. :-)

I don't think, there a limit at wikia. Please have a look on some gaming wikis.
#8
You don't need to, it's your decission. :-D I just wanted you to think about.

   I realized the multilingual links to your wiki and get noticed of a big problem. Wikispaces uses "+" in URLs instead of spaces. Wikia and many other wikis uses underscored (_) instead of. The Problem is, I can add a "+" so "8 Play Crossroad" will be "8+Play_Crossroad" in URL, but most browsers changes many signs into their ASCII-Codes with "%" as prefix. That means, most browsers are calling "8%2BPlay%2BCrossroad". The underscored will always be the same.

   In short: I'm not able to link to any of your wiki page, which contains a space in title. On wikia System it would be possible easyly.

   Please have a look at my links to your wiki (left sidebar -> "English"):

I created a first template version for maps. I hope, I didn't forget anything important. You may test it.

   My first impressive on wikispaces

   The tempate engine and wikispaces at all is very restricted. You may think about chaning the system? Wikia p.e. is much more powerfull with many features but free, too. And it's hosted on wikia servers, too. One year ago I spent a lot of time in testing those free wiki systems including hosting. Wikia would have been my first choice, but I decided to realize it myself. Wikia uses mediawiki, the system wikipedia uses. Wikia's systems ist always up to date.

I don't have MSN, just ICQ (158462232) and XFire (plhsbeatz).

No, that's not javascript. In wikis, you can use templates. They're rendered on the webserver. You can use variables wihin the templates. I'll try to have a look, how the templates work in your wiki. But I think, they're similar to mediawikis templates, even if there can't be used as much features as in mediawiki. But first, I'll try to realize the linking to your wiki :-D

Of Course, you started really fast and wrote a lot, good work. I saw, you inserted a map. I wrote a template for maps with many features. You may have a look at my description of http://www.mohaa-wiki.de/wiki/8_Play_Crossroads">8 Play Crossroads. The following features are included in my map template:

{{Map
   |Screenshot        = screenshot_mapname.jpg
   |mapname           = dm/full_mapname
   |game              = AA / SH / BT
   |maptype           = DM / OBJ
   |additinalgametype = [[Countdown]]
   |recommen_weapons  = a list of recommented weapons
   |DMW               = yes / no
   |description       = a description of the map
   |objectives        = description of objectives (on obj maps)
   |size              = very small / small / middle / big / very big
   |players           = with how many players is this map playable
   |specials          =
   * lift
   * secret tunnel under the map
   |errors            =
   * texture problems in spearhead
   * only one spawnpoint in FFA gametype
   |Download          = [http://www.mydomain.com/download/map.pk3 Download at mydomain.com]
   |similar_maps      = [[Duenkirchen]]
   }}

   This template includes automated categorization. I spend many hours in creating and expanding this template. If you like it, let me know. I could help you, with it.

@STORM

   I edited most images (Screenshots) to be brighter, but I'll have a look on that images, which are to dark. Thx ;-)

   @Soldier Of Ra

   No, don't worry, It's great to know there'll be a wiki in english, even if it's not "my" wiki. Which wiki system (or website) do you use / plan to use? Interlingual pages would be the best way to connect both wikis I think. Have you got an URL for me? I just took a look at wikia, but didn't find it.

Okay, great Idea. So, your focus would be on modding and mapping. That's a bit different than mohaa-wiki.de but with some consistencies. I have a custom map database with many detailed descriptions and just started to fill an mods Portal as an overview for existing mods.

   I hope, we can work together in some parts of your wiki. I spent a lot of time in creating templates for mapdescriptions p.e. with mediawiki. Validation of uploads is not fully possible. But I included this in a database of german cheaters. So I could help you realizing your mediawiki and otherside add some of your maps and mods to mohaa-wiki.de.

   Maybe, we can talk in Teamspeak?

Oh, great that's a beginning. Did you think about realising a wiki within mru or an independand wiki for mohaa?

   Probably you know http://mohwiki.com">http://mohwiki.com , an english wiki for moh with the focus on Airborne, but it seems there is no one who is interested in writing. Just a few pages since nearly a year.

   So, if you want, I'll check what to do making my mohaa wiki multilingual. In first step, it's possible to use the domain mohaa-wiki.de an later register a new domain (mohaa-wiki.com / net / org) an use de.mohaa-wiki.xxx and en.mohaa-wiki.xxx.

   What do you think about that?
